Statins & serotonin, what do the drugs do beyond cholesterol lowering?
Statins are drugs that lower cholesterol. Amitabha Chattopadhyay's lab have been detailing the effect of chronic statin use on cells, especially on a group of neurotransmitter receptors, called serotonin receptors. In their recent study, they show cAMP signaling by the serotonin receptor is reduced upon lovastatin treatment due to reduction in cholesterol and polymerization of the actin cytoskeleton.
Understanding COVID-19 and other viral infections
A multi-institutional study led by Santosh Chauhan shows a strong interferon system can protect from severe SARS-CoV-2 infection and pathology including inflammation-induced neuropathology. The study was done in mice.
Towards a more seamless cornea regeneration
Kiran Kumar's group with researchers from LVPEI and IIT, Hyderabad show the potential application of a human corneal extracellular matrix hydrogel without any additional materials for scarless corneal tissue regeneration. They also show a method to reduce the wasting of donated corneal tissue from eye banks. They found no difference in efficacy in using human tissues or that from cows. This may help ease clinical translation and can be used topically without sutures as an outpatient procedure.
