Flip flopping cellular receptors
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are cellular nanomachines that can transmit signals. They act as a communication interface between the external and internal environments of the cell. It is important to study how modifications of GPCRs affect the cellular communication and thus, the cellular functions.
Palmitoylation of GPCRs is a process in which a palmitoyl group is covalently added to the GPCR. In this collaborative work with Durba Sengupta of CSIR-NCL, Amitabha Chattopadhyay explored the change in lipid (cholesterol and phospholipids) interactions with palmitoylation of the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R), a GPCR which acts as a drug target in diabetes and obesity.
They show here that both cholesterol and phospholipids interact with GLP-1R. But they exhibit differential interactions in the presence and absence of the palmitoyl chain, implying differences in signalling by the receptor under these conditions.

What formed the Ladakhi population?
In the high-altitude valley of Ladakh, formed of a few major communities. How were these communities formed? Recent study from K Thangaraj's lab in collaboration with Niraj Rai at DST-Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences show that Changpa and Monpa tribes share a common maternal genetic ancestor with affinity to Tibeto-Burman speakers. On the other hand, Brokpas are the most ancient settlers of this region with mitochondrial lineage going back to Neolithic period.

Making science storybooks
Students from CCMB, CDFD and University of Hyderabad came together with Ipsa Jain to build a storybook for children to tell a story of shape of atoms. We will put out their story soon.

Taking science to public spaces
It's time to take science to public spaces so that we reach public who do not find themselves in science institute spaces for any reason. The Hyderabad Literary Fest 2024 introduced a new stream, Science and the City, that brought our students and scientists face to face with citizenry to discuss their work in the context of questions that public think is worthwhile.
