Tune out unnecessary information from your neurons
Runa Hamid and her team find a transporter protein that is important in habituation. In their study, they find that fruitflies with lesser choline transporter, known for its role in allowing choline neurotransmitter into neurons, cannot habituate to smells and become hypersensitive. These behaviors are much like in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Are choline transporters involved in ASD? Future studies will tell.

Formal approval for marketing hydroxyurea for Sickle Cell Anemia
Hydroxyurea, comparatively inexpensive and used as an anti-cancer agent, is also widely used in Sickle Cell Anemia but without a formal approval. CSIR-Sickle Cell Anemia Mission, coordinated by CCMB, has now approval from Drug Controller General of India to market hydroxyurea for Sickle Cell Anemia. This will be coupled with post-marketing surveillance.

Genome sequencing is in vogue. What exactly is it?
Genome sequencing has become a household discussion during the ongoing pandemic. But our scientists have been sequencing genomes of many organisms, much before the coronavirus crisis hit us. What exactly does genome sequencing tell us? What kinds of questions can we hope to address such a tool? Disha Atukuri writes on it.

Growing CCMB family - New faculty members

Vasant Shinde joins us as CSIR Bhatnagar fellow. He is an internationally well-known archaeologist with interests in anthropology and human genetic studies.

Saikat Chowdhury is a structural biologist who tries to understand the mechanical engineering of a cell via its cytoskeleton. His lab uses biochemical and biophysical tools with cryo-electron microscopy and image analysis to visualize the cell's working.
#MiloCCMB - Studying bacterial armor, its cell-wall
Dr Manjula Reddy and her group study a special class of bacterial proteins that cut the bacterial cell-wall, and help the bacteria grow and divide. Can these proteins be targeted by novel antibiotics?
Time to meet our Young Innovators - Stay tuned
Our 9th Young Innovators Program is around the corner. Students across Hyderabad came online to listen to Raghunand Tirumalai on antibiotic resistance, and wrote a selection test. The selected students will be at CCMB from 4-12 Jan doing experiments and discussing science with our scientists.
