A global test for Chytrid - towards fighting the deadliest wildlife disease
Chytridiomycosis or chytrid is a pandemic caused by fungal pathogens among the amphibians, and has not had a sensitive globally applicable diagnostic test. Karthikeyan Vasudevan's group with collaborators across India, Australia and Panama have developed and validated a test for the disease.
Read more on why it is important to develop a diagnostic tool to detect chytrid globally.

Microbial cross-talks in biofilms
Biofilms are formed of microbial cells sticking to each other and to surfaces, making a favorable location for these cells to survive and grow, even in otherwise unfavorable conditions. These also sometimes, make getting rid of pathogenic microbes difficult. In a recent article, Sriram Varahan talks about how cross-talk between fungi and bacteria in polymicrobial biofilms shape disease outcomes.
Between mitotic arrest and differentiation - centrosomes role in it
In an opinion article, Priti Atmakuru and Jyotsna Dhawan write on the role of the ancient organelle, centrosomes in cells not only in cell division but also in cell fate determination. They highlight the need to look at the centrosome and its membranous projection, the primary cilium, as being pivotal in the transitions between cell growth and differentiation across tissues  (with implications in homeostasis and ciliopathies/ health and disease).
Genetic diseases are preventable. How?
Timely testing and genetic counseling are key to avoiding many common genetic diseases.
Talking to young people about the Gene-Health Connect
CCMB, with the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore have co-developed the Gene-Health Connect, a mobile and interactive science exhibition. Set in a bus with 20 exhibits, this exhibition is designed for young adults. Inaugurated by the Hon'ble Governor of Telangana and Lt Governor of Puducherry, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, the bus will go around educational institutes - high schools, science and non-science colleges, medical and engineering colleges, universities, research institutes and science centres of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in the next six months.

The bus is currently in Tirupati. If you are in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, and would like the bus on your organization/community's premises, please register here.
Connecting biology and medicine
Med-SRT (Medical Student Research Training Program) is CCMB's flagship program for medicine students to understand research in biology, and thus encourage the paths of clinician-scientists. This year, we had 20 4th year MBBS students from Osmania Medical College, trained on molecular techniques based on DNA, cell biology, cytogenetics, protein biochemistry and immunological techniques.
