How to study the interplay of lipids and proteins on cell membranes?
Cell membranes, due to the charges on lipids, proteins and water in the membranes, carry a membrane dipole potential. In this feature article, Amitabha Chattopadhyay and his group members talk of different ways of measuring this dipole potential. They suggest its utility as a tool to study the interplay of lipids and proteins in membrane organization and function.
How do scientists grow mini-organs in labs?
Tanishqa Chaubal from Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Kolkata spent some time with our stem cell biologists, and writes how and why scientists grow mini-organs or organoids, as they are called. From studying diseases to help test new drugs to studying the mechanisms of organ development and growth - organoids are going to be here as potent microphysiological systems.

Do you know how DNA-based technologies are used for wildlife forensics?
LaCONES-CCMB conducted a five-day hands on workshop on Wildlife DNA Forensics, as part of CSIR-Skill Development Initiative. Participants included university students, veterinary doctors and forest officers. The workshop focused on DNA technology and its applications in detection of wildlife crime.
Upcoming conference on reproductive biology - for animal and human health
CCMB, with University of Hyderabad are hosting the annual meeting of Society for Reproductive Biology and Comparative Endocrinology with an international conference from Sept 14-16. Researchers and students will present their work in reproductive sciences, vertebrate endocrinology, endocrine and genetic disorders, fertility control in animal as well as human health and welfare.

Dhananjay Chaturvedi studies how organisms are formed and maintain their form. His focus is particularly on the adult stem cells in the flight muscles of Drosophila melanogaster that help these muscles to repair, as and when needed.




Sriram Varahan studies how microbes survive despite fluctuations in nutrient availability. He wants to understand how this also affects their ability to infect host cells.
