Dry swab one step RT-PCR - a faster, cheaper and safer way to test more

As the COVID-19 testing centres are pressed to their fullest, it is timely to consider CCMB's dry swab one step RT-PCR testing method. The method has ICMR approval for use in field. It is being taken ahead by Apollo Hospitals, Meril Life, Spice Health and now, Capital Health Services.

Pick the hotspots before they go out of control

It has become absolutely crucial to pick the COVID-19 hotspots in our cities as soon as we can. CCMB's sewage surveillance technique can help identify and monitor these over time at a nominal expenditure.

Antisera against coronavirus from horse to be tested in humans

There is no targeted therapy against the coronavirus yet. With VINS BioProducts Ltd and the University of Hyderabad, we have shown that inactivated coronavirus, upon injection in horses, can develop neutralizing antibodies in their blood/sera. This is called antisera, and has the potential of fighting the live virus. We now plan to test this in human clinical trials.

Single species of gibbons in India - what that means for conservation?

Recent findings from G Umapathy's lab at LaCONES-CCMB tell us that Hoolock gibbons in India belong to only a single species. This is a good news for its conservation efforts. This means that zoos in different parts of northeast India with Hoolock gibbons with different outwardly characteristics can still be interbred. This will help in creating their fit and resilient populations.

Hox genes regulate body axis. What regulates the Hox genes?

Homeotic or Hox genes have been crucial in body-axis formation and segmentation in all bilateral multicellular life forms. Conserved GA-rich regions are found between these genes. The factor binding to these regions, had remained unknown. This study from Rakesh Mishra's group finds GAGA associated Factor (GAF) binds to these regions of the HoxD cluster of genes.
